Your Summer 2025 Movie Lineup

2025 has already shown great promise for the film industry. With movies from Paddington in Peru (Dougal Wilson), to Snow White (Marc Webb), to A Minecraft Movie (Jared Hess), the kids’ movie genre is already off to a great start, despite some critiques. Marvel has already released two films this year: Captain America: Brave New World (Julius Onah) and Thunderbolts* (Jake Schreier), the recent smash hit that is making headlines with the rename of The New Avengers. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is a critical and box office success. No matter your movie preferences, the summer of 2025 has an exciting lineup of cinematic releases. Here are some of the most anticipated movies coming up this summer. 


May


Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning


Said to be the end of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning follows the secret agent played by star Tom Cruise as he races against time to save the world from evil Artificial Intelligence. This franchise finale, which is set to release on May 23, was filmed at the same time as the 2023 Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One


Lilo and Stitch


Also set to release on May 23, Disney’s live-action remake of the 2002 classic Lilo and Stitch will hit the big screen. The film stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo, a Hawaiian girl who befriends the runaway alien Stitch, Sydney Agudong as Lilo’s older sister, Nani, and Billy Magnussen and Zach Galifianakis as the aliens that hunt Stitch, Pleakley and Jumba. 


Karate Kid: Legends


From the original Karate Kid film in 1984 to the recent Netflix series Cobra Kai, the Karate Kid franchise has been kept within the pop culture consciousness. On May 30, Karate Kid franchise star Ralph Macchio will reprise his role as Daniel LaRusso, as well as Jackie Chan reprising his role as Mr. Han. In Karate Kid: Legends, Daniel and Mr. Han will have to team up to teach the new student played by Ben Wang. The film is directed by Jonathan Entwistle, and the screenplay is by Rob Lieber. 


The Phoenician Scheme


Writer and director Wes Anderson is bringing another star-studded ensemble movie to cinemas on May 30. Starring Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Cera, Bryan Cranston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, and more, the focus of this comedy drama centers around Anatole “Zsa-Zsa” Korda (Benicio Del Toro) and Liesl (Mia Threapleton). Korda, an international business magnate, and daughter, Liesl, the heir to his fortune yearning to join a convent, must travel around the world to prevent Korda’s assassination. 


Bring Her Back


Bring Her Back, a film from Danny and Michael Philippou, is a horror flick that follows a young, sight-impaired woman (Sora Wong) and her teen brother (Billy Barratt) who end up in a foster home after a family tragedy. While their guardian (Sally Hawkins) seems too nice and their housemate (Jonah Wren Phillips) seems odd, we find out there is a secondary agenda to their presence at the group home. This film is sure to be extremely scary and gory. 


June


Ballerina


Len Wiseman’s “John Wick” spinoff Ballerina follows an assassin, played by Ana de Armas, who was trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma and seeks vengeance for the murder of her family. Keanu Reeves will be reprising his role as John Wick. The film also stars Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, the late Lance Reddick, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, and Ian McShane. It is set to release on June 6. 


How to Train Your Dragon 


15 years since the original How to Train Your Dragon film was released in 2010, DreamWorks’ dragon franchise is making a comeback through the live-action format on June 13. This fantasy/adventure film directed, written and produced by Dean DeBlois (writer of the first three How to Train Your Dragon animated films), follows Hiccup (Mason Thomas), a misfit teenage boy among the dragon-hunting Isle of Berk as he befriends a rare dragon. The film also stars Gerard Butler as Hiccup’s father, Stoick, and Nico Parker as Astrid.


Elio


Elio is Pixar’s latest original film, set to release on June 20, follows an 11-year-old who is obsessed with space and gets beamed up to an interplanetary organization while being mistaken for Earth’s leader. Among the film’s stars are Jameela Jamil, Zoe Saldaña, and Brad Garrett. 


28 Years Later 


28 Years Later revisits Danny Boyle’s world he created in 28 Days Later, where a virus turns most of the world into zombies. This film takes place, like the title says, nearly thirty years after the original and follows the father (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and son (Alfie Williams) as they try to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The film also stars Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes as some of the non-infected that need to fight the zombies to survive. 28 Years Later releases in cinemas on June 20. 


M3GAN 2.0


The dancing killer doll M3GAN can be seen again in theaters on June 27. This film is a sequel to the 2022 horror flick M3GAN and stars Amie Donald, Allison Williams, and Violet McGraw. M3GAN 2.0 was directed by Gerard Johnstone. 


F1


F1 follows Brad Pitt as a Formula One driver who is called out of retirement to mentor a rookie prodigy, played by Damson Idris. On June 27, you can see Hollywood stars and all 10 real-life Formula One teams and their drivers appear in the F1 film themselves. 



Jurassic World: Rebirth 


Jurassic World: Rebirth, written by David Koepp, who wrote the original Jurassic Park, and directed by Gareth Edwards, is the latest installment of the Jurassic Park franchise that will release on July 2. It follows the story of a team of scientists tracking down dinosaur DNA from an island that only the most dangerous dinosaurs inhabit. The film takes place five years after Jurassic World: Dominion and stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali. 


Superman


James Gunn’s latest film features the Man of Steel’s (David Corensweet) return as a part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly rebooted DC Universe. On July 11, see Superman, along with his dog Krypto, battle once against Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) on the big screen. 


Smurfs


On July 18, the iconic blue Smurfs are making their return to film. Smurfs is an animated musical directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon. The film is voiced by actors such as Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Daniel Levy, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, and Billie Lourd. 


The Fantastic Four: First Steps 


This reboot of Fantastic Four will mark Marvel’s third big film of the year, set for release on July 25. The film takes place in 1960s New York and is directed by Matt Shakman, who also directed the 2021 Disney+ show WandaVision. The film stars Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Edon Moss-Backrach as Ben Grimm, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm. 


August 


The Naked Gun


A sequel to the 1988 action-comedy franchise, Liam Neeson plays a bumbling police officer. The film is directed by Akica Schaffer, written by Schaffer, San Gregor, and Doug Mand, and stars Leslie Neilsen, Pamela Anderson, and Paul Walter Hauser. The Naked Gun will be in theaters on August 1. 


Freakier Friday


22 years after the original 2003 comedy Freaky Friday, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are returning in this sequel as their mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna. This film, set to release on August 8, will feature a “multigenerational twist” on the plot, showing two families coming together.
