Harrison Ford is a name known well beyond Hollywood. As the man who plays a handful of popular characters, Ford is most recognizable for his roles as Han Solo in the Star Wars saga and as Indiana Jones in the five films currently comprising that series.
Life Beginnings
Harrison Ford was born on July 13, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. His family lineage includes different talents of actors, models, and radio personalities. Following in his family member’s footsteps, he worked at his school radio station, WMTH, at his public school in Park Ridge, Illinois. Though acting was not always in his mind as a future career, Ford later attended Ripon College in Wisconsin as a philosophy major where he enrolled in an acting class during his junior year. His acting career really started in 1964 when he travelled to California in search of voice-over roles and took up small acting roles as bit characters in movies and television projects for Columbia Pictures. The contract he signed with Columbia Pictures paid him $150 per week as he played fill in roles in various films. He worked on multiple TV shows including Gunsmoke, Ironside, Kung Fu, and American Style.
Diving Into Blockbusters
Ford’s first credited role was in A Time for Killing (1967), a Columbia Pictures Western film directed by Phil Karlson. After years of not picking up any major roles, he fell into self-employment as a carpenter. With his carpentry skills, he worked for figures like Francis Ford Coppola and Joan Didion. He even spent a short time on tour with The Doors as a second-unit cameraman. He was soon hired by George Lucas and appeared in his 1973 film American Graffiti. His connection with Lucas led to his role in the Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), starring as the well-known Han Solo. His success through the Star Wars saga has continued through the 21st century, with the original three films, Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983) getting a sequel trilogy in which Harrison Ford stars in. Han Solo appears in both Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). His success through franchise films is also through his role as Indiana Jones which began with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. This film was produced by Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg. His acting role as Indiana Jones has been reprised throughout the five films in this franchise, most recently with the 2023 film Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny.
Additionally, Ford stars in Apocalypse Now (1979), The Fugitive (1993), Air Force One (1997), Cowboys & Aliens (2011), Working Girl (1988), The Devil’s Own (1997), Sabrina (1995), and many more hit movies.
While Han Solo and Indiana Jones are among Ford’s most successful character portrayals, his career only grew from there. Ford has starred in over 60 films throughout his life, including Blade Runner, Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi film in which Ford plays a “blade runner.” This film concept saw its success in a sequel made at a much later date, Blade Runner 2049 (2017), that Ford also stars in.
Franchise Fame
All of the success gained by Harrison Ford through his roles in action-adventure blockbuster films goes to show the power of the franchise film. When an audition for one film turns into five jobs throughout the franchise, there will surely be more money gained. While the numerous films will garner more revenue and jobs for the actor, the merchandising that comes with a franchise like Star Wars will garner more notability for the actor. Having your face on cereal boxes, figurines, posters, and toys changes your popularity. Harrison Ford is so well known because of all of his work, of course, but Star Wars and Indiana Jones have made him a household name. Another facet of franchises is the fandom that they create. With the opportunity to see a new movie from the same story in theaters again, fans are allowed time to generate more interest in the series. The reboots, revivals, and remakes that Hollywood seems to favor so much today have generated great new interest in these older series like Star Wars and Indiana Jones, riding on the high popularity they already had. The benefits of the franchise film and blockbuster have given Harrison Ford the admiration he has today.
Accomplishments
Ford has won many awards throughout his career. While his nominations are numerous, the awards he has received include, but are not limited to: AFI Life Achievement Award, and Honorary César and Honorary Palme D’Or, a Cecil B Demille Golden Globe award, 2 Saturn Awards for best actor, multiple Blockbuster Entertainment Awards and People’s Choice Awards. Ford was also inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003 and the California Hall of Fame in 2016.
Current Work
Ford’s more recent work follows the theme of his career by staying within the genre of action/adventure blockbuster films. Ford also stars in two streaming series. In 1923, a Paramount+ Western series about the rise of Western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression, Ford plays James Dutton, the patriarch of the Dutton family the series follows. Ford’s current television work also includes Shrinking, an Apple TV series about a grieving therapist. More similar to his action roles, Ford stars in the Marvel movie Captain America: Brave New World, as “Thunderbolt.” This film was released in theaters on February 14, 2025.
Harrison Ford has definitely lived an unforgettable life. He is not only an actor but has also executive produced works such as The Staircase (2022), Extraordinary Measures (2010), and K-19: The Widowmaker (2002). Ford’s legacy as his iconic sci-fi, action/adventure swashbuckling heroes, along with his lifelong work of acting in over 60 films, will live on and goes to show how much fame can spread through the business of Hollywood blockbusters.
